The
agricultural extension system of the country was grossly unorganized
until the early seventies. As a result of which the boons
of the Green revolution did not reach every part of the country.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) constituted
a high level committee to review the extension system under
the Chairmanship of Dr. Mohan Singh Mehta of Seva Mandir,
Udaipur for formulating the institutional design for vocational
training in agriculture. This committee suggested the starting
of Farm Science Centres, which are now known as Krishi Vigyan
Kendras. Thus Krishi Vigyan Kendras are established by ICAR
throughout the country and are implemented by ICAR Research
Institutes, State Agricultural Universities (SAU) and reputed
Non Government Organizations (NGO). The first Krishi Vigyan
Kendra was established in 1974 at Pondichery under TamilNadu
Agricultural University.
Thus evolved a network of pioneering science based institution,
KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA, to train the farmers to improve their
skills and knowledge, frontline demonstration to establish
production potential, on farm testing of the identified technology
to identify its location –specificity under various
farming systems and training of extension personnel to orient
them in the frontier areas of technology development.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra acts as light house to the farming community.
The chief objective of the Kendra is to communicate the latest
technical knowledge to the farmers through the principles
of "Teaching by learning" and "Learning by
Doing”.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Burdwan is one of the 706 KVKs sponsored
by ICAR. It was sanctioned and established in April, 2005
under the administrative control of Central Research Institute
for Jute and Allied Fibres (ICAR), Barrackpore, Kolkata- 700
120 West Bengal. KVK Burdwan is one of the 32 KVKs those under
control of ICAR institutes. The KVK was set up at a place
